Italian Palazzo
Rome, Italy
Fall 2024
This project envisions a new palazzo in Rome, reinterpreting the city’s architectural heritage through a contemporary lens. After visiting and analyzing the site in person, I gained a deeper understanding of the surrounding urban fabric, street rhythm, and spatial irregularities that define the area around Via Giulia. The design responds to these conditions, seeking to revitalize the context while maintaining harmony with the historic identity of the palazzo typology.
Inspired by precedents such as Palazzo del Quirinale, Palazzo Barberini, and Palazzo Borghese, the project explores how proportion, rhythm, and ornament can evolve within a modern framework. A central courtyard serves as the spatial and social heart, connecting the new and existing palazzos through a wraparound loggia that encourages circulation and dialogue.
Material choices—stone façades, a reinforced concrete structure, and grey brick courtyard walls—reflect Rome’s traditional palette, while marble columns and glass openings introduce a contemporary sensibility. Along the Via Giulia façade, a floral fresco expresses the project’s central motif, the beauty of life, infusing the architecture with color, movement, and a sense of renewal within the timeless Roman fabric.
